Media Ban to be Lifted

Reuters is reporting the Pentagon will relax its ban on media coverage of returning U.S. war dead by allowing families to decide whether to allow photos and television footage of the flag-draped coffins of their loved ones, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Thursday. Full story here.

Nordic to Gothic

Got in a good 6-mile nordic ski with Hearsay & Gimpy to the "town" of Gothic on Saturday. Believe it or not, there are some year round folks in this ski in-ski out community. Hard core folks for sure. We had great weather . . . with hi's in the 40's. Balmy for Gothic in February.

Living on Your Own Terms

I came across a spot on article today on Zen Habits about pursuing your dreams and living on your own terms. And yes it does pitch a book but the ideas are solid. Read the article here.

Email Inbox - Permanently Empty

I'm afraid that I do battle with my inbox way more than I need to. My typical style is to let emails pile up for 3-5 days and then answer them all in one fell swoop. It's a boom bust cycle of sorts. Ryan Jordan has a solution to keep you email inbox permanently empty. It's fairly unique . . . check it out here.

Woods Walk Nordic

Finally got up to the Woods Walk area to nordic ski Upper & Lower Red Lady. Got 2 full loops in + some bonus stuff down behind Ruth's Road. Nice day of it . . . sunny and fairly warm. Not many folks in the Woods Walk area which made for an extra bonus.

Saturday Snowshoe Epic

Hit a quick 7-mile snowshoe jaunt this morning from CB South over to Brush Creek Road with Hearsay & Scott. My quads got worked but if felt good. We were postholing a bit even with big old snowshoes on our feet. 7 miles in 4 hours. Here's a few pics from today:

The Glitch Mob in Crested Butte

Saw the Glitch Mob tonight in CB @ the Eldo. Check the pic below from their website . . . it sums it up . . . 4 dudes / 4 laptops and they crushed it. Probably the best electronic show I've ever seen.

Check the vid below to see how these guys roll . . . disclaimer . . . there's some words of the 4-letter variety in the video below that may not be appropriate for the easily offended.

Why Twitter?

I'm on Twitter. Why? It looked neat and really is in essence just a micro version of a blog. It's simple, basic and each blog post or "tweet" is limited to 140 characters or less. Can't get more simple than that really. I've got a Twitter wiki over there to the right which shows my most recent tweets.

What is Twitter? It's a micro blog that allows the user to answer the question, "What are you doing right now?" Pretty simple but in actuality it is so much more. Some folks have said you've got to use it to understand it and that is spot on. Check out Twitter's homepage.

Who is on Twitter?
My hope . . . is to use Twitter for a bunch of things including keeping me honest about my 16-week training program for my upcoming June 13th Run the Caldera Marathon in New Mexico. My 16-week plan has me running 4 days a week and I'm gonna post those runs on Twitter so that I'll have to hold my head in shame if I don't do them. Training starts Feb 24th and this will be my 1st marathon so wish me luck.

I'm also quite proud of the fact that I have a Twitter account and still no Facebook account. No particular reason except I'm one of the few holdouts in the history of man that does not yet have a facebook account. That's all.

Tweet on.

PCT Love Letter

My roommate, Hearsay, is a famous long-distance hiker these days. The reason I know this is because he wrote a love letter to one of his "Cactus to Coast" sponsors and they posted it on their website.

Down to 3

I've finally got my marathon search narrowed down to 3:

1) Utah Valley Marathon - Provo, UT - June 13th

2) Estes Park Marathon - Estes Park, CO - June 14th

3) Run the Caldera Marathon - Los Alamos, NM - June 13th

Running a marathon has been a life goal of mine for almost 10 years but I've never made it a priority as my main focus has been long-distance hiking. Having a full-time job has put me in a good situation to switch gears and go for a marathon. I'm inclined towards a trail marathon since I'm slightly partial to trails. Of the 3 above, the Run the Caldera Marathon looks most appealing to me given that it is entirely on trails and it's in one of my favorite areas . . . northern New Mexico. The Utah Valley Marathon looks a bit easier but I can't figure out if it's on paved roads or trails or both. The Estes Park Marathon looks super scenic but it's on paved roads the whole way and given its proximity to Boulder and Denver, I bet it's a madhouse. To be continued . . .

Packjacking

From the guy that brought your frontpacking . . . Matti "Speedo" Urlass, the Finish/German Sensation, brings the latest craze in long-distance hiking . . . PACKJACKING. Not for the squeamish, this advanced hiking technique is only for experienced trekkers. Insert your trekking poles thru the haul loop on the top/back of your pack while resting the the trekking poles on your shoulder straps and then give them a slight lift. Takes the weight off your shoulders. This technique is crucial on desert trails like the Hayduke Trail where carrying 70 miles worth of water would otherwise crush your shoulders and leave you on your back in the sand like a limp turtle. Packjacking . . . only try under expert supervision.
